This presentation is intended to introduce the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) through comparison to other soil classification systems (i.e., USDA and AASHTO) and an explanation of the steps in the classification process. Photographs and descriptions of some USCS soil types, as well as tips to aide in visual identification of some of the soil types will be provided. In addition, the equipment and processes utilized to obtain soil and rock samples for geotechnical and environmental purposes will be explained.
